South Australia Bans Single-Use Plastic Coffee Cups and Lunch Boxes from September

Next month, South Australia will ban more types of single-use plastic products, including coffee cups and food containers.
According to The Advertiser, under additional measures to avoid waste, the South Australian government announced that from September 1, it will further ban single-use plastic products, including hot and cold drink cups, ready-to-eat food containers, food bag labels, confetti, balloon sticks and sealing clips.
Expanded polystyrene lunch boxes, plastic fruit and vegetable bags, thick plastic carrier bags from supermarkets or boutiques, and takeaway vest bags will also be banned. All of these items must be replaced with compostable or reusable alternatives.

There will be no grace period after the ban is implemented, and those who sell, supply or distribute banned items may face fines of between A$315 and A$20,000.
Deputy Premier Susan Close said South Australia is a national leader in reducing waste. "South Australia has the highest per capita recycling rate in the country," she said. "It's the culture of our state, it's something we're proud of, and we're continuing to promote that."
Prior to this, under the Single-Use and Other Plastics (Waste Avoidance) Act 2020, a range of single-use plastic products, including straws, will be phased out by next year, aiming to reduce pollution, reduce carbon emissions and protect marine life.
From September 1, 2025, plastic labels on the surface of fruit, small fish-shaped plastic bottles for sushi soy sauce, and plastic products used for pre-packaging will no longer be allowed to be sold, supplied or distributed in South Australia.
